DocsKit - Next.js Documentation Template
Who DocsKit is for
DocsKit is for developers and teams who need a complete documentation site - the marketing homepage that converts visitors into customers, and the docs layout that keeps users reading. Mintlify charges $300/month for a similar result. Nextra and Fumadocs are free but ship nothing designed: no homepage, no search wiring, no syntax theme. DocsKit costs $39 once.
The Pagefind search indexes your content at build time and runs entirely client-side. No Algolia account, no Typesense cluster, no keys to rotate. Shiki syntax highlighting works server-side with accurate token-level coloring for 100+ languages. The design system is one CSS file - change two variables and the entire UI matches your brand.
Deploy to Vercel free tier, Netlify, Cloudflare Pages, or GitHub Pages. No Node.js server in production, no database, no API keys required to go live.
- Open-source maintainer who wants professional docs without a $300/month hosted service
- SaaS founder documenting a developer API or SDK
- Developer advocate or technical writer at an early-stage startup
- Solo developer shipping a commercial tool who needs a docs site and a landing page in one
Common questions about DocsKit
How do I add new documentation pages?
Create MDX files in the docs content directory. The sidebar navigation is generated from the file structure - add a file, it appears in the nav. Add frontmatter (title, description) and it populates the page metadata.
Does Pagefind search work on a free Vercel plan?
Yes. Pagefind indexes your content at build time and ships the index as static files alongside your site. Search runs entirely in the browser with no API calls and no backend. It works on every static host including Vercel's free tier.
How do I change the primary color to match my brand?
Edit --primary and --primary-hover in globals.css. Those two variables control buttons, active sidebar states, TOC highlights, code block accents, and search match highlighting - the entire UI updates from two lines.
Can I use a custom domain?
Yes. Deploy to Vercel and add your domain in the Vercel dashboard under Domains. Vercel provisions a free SSL certificate automatically. The same works on Netlify and Cloudflare Pages.
Can I remove the marketing homepage and just have the docs?
Yes. The marketing homepage and docs layout are separate route groups. Delete the homepage files and set the docs index as your root. The docs layout with sidebar, TOC, and search works independently.
